Help interpret dream

I'm curious what you may think about a recurring dream I think I've solved....
Since a little girl, I've had recurring dreams, all similar in nature. They all take me 'down' to somewhere dark (holes in the ground, basements, staircases that keep going down, etc.) and there's always something extremely frightning down 'there' that terrorizes me to the point of waking me up with severe panic and/or screaming. I remember my first one. I was very young and the dream stood out from my 'normal' dreams I had as a kid. I'm walking down a dusty path and I see a cabin on a hill. I go inside and find a small hallway that bends and turns (this is also a common theme, hallways...like a maze of hidden rooms or passageways) and then there's a hole right in the floor. I went down and I can't remember what happened. I blocked a lot of these from my childhood since they were so disturbing. I used to wake the entire household screaming and I'd never know about it until the next day. I recently had another similar dream. I can't recall the details but this time I had a realization that these dreams are probably a symbol of myself....what I mean by that is when I'm going 'down' somewhere it's just going deeper inside 'of me' and my fear is 'myself'. I had a psychic tell me that once but it didn't make any sense. I guess it still doesn't but at least I think I have these recurring dreams figured out. I haven't shared them with anyone in the past but I thought I might get some creative thoughts here. Oh, one odd thing...every time I'd have one of these, they would usually wake me up about the same time at night regardless of when I went to bed.

  • I think you are totally onto something. I don't want to say much more of my own interpretation because yours is more important.

I will say this-play around with this idea that it is yourself you are going down into, and notice how the dream changes over time once you allow that meaning into your consciousness.

a helpful thing I picked up from Steven Aizenstadt was to look at a dream from a dream-centered perspective. What might the house, the hallways, the paths, the cabins, have to say if you would listen to them?

what are your waking associations with basements and staircases?

    hope this helps!
    • Thank you for your thoughts. It's not the buildings, staircases, basements, etc. that are constant...it's the process of going 'down' or being below that is the same. Oddly, the place is always different. Like, I only had one dream that showed a cabin, only one basement of a perticular home, once it was a cave with no structures, another time it was just a hole in the ground.

There's actually more to the dream....when I was little, I'd wake up and see a dark, cloaked figure standing over me...like the 'death' figure...sometimes it appears in my dreams instead...but lately, most of the time I can't see what it is that terrifies me...I'm always 'half-way' down...whatever scares me is actually deeper down and I try to avoid it as much as possible.
Once, but only once, the dream took me to a balcony (I ran up instead of down) and there were three dark figures that followed me up. I felt they wanted something from me. The fear was so great that I awoke before I could get any answers.

When I wake up it's usually in a state of extreme anxiety/panic and terror. I'm just always relieved it wasn't real. Other than that, I don't really have any associations with anything in the dreams...at least i don't think I do.
Please feel free to share your interpretation if you do have something in mind.....I've had these for as long as i can remember so I'm curious what others may come up with.

    Hello, Zeela

What helps sometimes more than anything to jog your own memories is to write about them or express them in some form like here or a song or a short story or painting----in short-whatever however, often you come to understanding. I don't see a difinative conclusion in your writing, so you seek to explore more what this is? Would you like us to take pokes at it and guess at your riddle, or proclaim what u think it is:)???

You are going down deep inside, if you make me guess, so this could be to you a doorway in the subconcious. The emptions you experience could be repetative and decreasing in intensity if this is the case, as you have learned you continue to wash up on the shores of waking perspective intact.

In what way were they disturbing beyond the emotion? Where there foreign figures/characters within your dream from this point? Do you ever feel like your brain is changing channels, but carrying your almost-body with it?

    Best wishes,

    JJ
    • Here's my 2 cents:

Mazelike passageways and holes or portals could definately be metaphors for exploring different aspects of your psyche. I don't remember where I heard this, but I do think it's true that everything and everyone you see in dreams, even people & places you recognise specifically, are reflections of some aspect of yourself. So, you might consider these dreams as being your mind's way of working out an aspect of your personality you don't like, are unconsciously or otherwise rebelling against, or- since you've been having them from a very young age- maybe someone like your parents might have told you was wrong or bad. Robed figures are definately an archetypical image that could represent any of those things, or none of them. Think about your self perception- maybe this dream is your unconscious trying to confront you about how you percieve youself.
      • I agree that your dreams of descending into dark places is about exploration of your subconscious -- maybe your Shadow side. Suggest you take a cue from the dreams -- since they are strong and persistent -- that your psyche is directing you to do some exploration. Suggest you try to, first of all, welcome the opportunity to mine the gold that may well be available to you. Then, either: in the waking state suggest to yourself that when you are in that type of dream you screw up your courage and proceed to explore the dark passgeways and wherever they lead you; or, with a facilitator (best way to do it), or on your own, lie down, close your eyes, calm yourself, and then choose one of the scenarios and visualize proceeding on an exploration of the dreamscape, describing what's happening as you descend. I'm sure you will find and face some aspect of yourself / some archetypal learning that will be very beneficial to you.
