can someone please point me towards some sites, books, whatever regarding "night terrors?" i have heard they are very uncommon in adults, that they are something you "grow out of." any info or experience with the subject is greatly appreciated. thanks ahead of time,

Re: night terrors?
Sat, July 17, 2004 - 6:29 PMI wish I could recommend beyond Jung and then the standard slew who preceded him. To understand the psychology of night terrors is an interesting undertaking. If they manifest in extreme physical responses and emotional backwash, then I can understand the quest. Poe was better at conveyeing the imagery most commonly associated with this condition, if you call it that. I wish I had more for you. I will ask some friends and see if I can do better for you than this.
Blessings,
JJ

Re: night terrors?
Sun, July 18, 2004 - 12:23 AMYes to all of the above. They occur at approximatly the same time every night, and are something that has been a part of my life as long as i can remember. I suppose I have simply "gotten used to it" to some extent, but it definitly affects anyone to share my bed and that bothers me more than anything (to expose the people I care about to it). It is hard for me to come out of the dreams and I'm always confused and furious when I do wake up, often taking it out on the person sleeping with me. I am very aware of what they came from and have long since dealt with all that. But, I am frustrated and ready to sleep through the damn night! Thanks again for any info.... -

Re: night terrors?
Sun, July 18, 2004 - 3:27 AMI have a type of night terror called hypnogogic sleep paralysis. I am awake in bed, but unable to move while my subconcious causes me to hallucinate and see things. I used to mainly get the alien abductions, but now my subconcious is a bit more clever. Often I'll think a friend has came into my room and woken me up only to have him or her shoot me or do something equally unpleasant.
Be glad you just have nightmares. Laying in bed unable to move for hours while your loved ones flay the skin from your bones is not fun.

Re: night terrors?
Mon, July 19, 2004 - 10:43 PMNo Jess,
I don't think you know me.
It's just that in Chinese Medicine there is something called the body clock in which every 24 hours is broken up into 12 - 2 hour periods of time in which energy is said to flow or focus on a specific body function. In Chinese medicine these same body functions are also associated with certain emotions. 1-3am is the clock hours for the liver meridian. This doesn't mean you have anything physically wrong with your liver, it just means that on a metaphysical level this is the time period of working out anxiety, anger, making decisions for change, and sorting out all of the information and experiences in your day. You said that you wake up confused and furious - both emotions associated with this meridian. In Chinese theory the quality of your nightmares would be different during a different period of the night.
It is possible that your subconscious is trying to force you to grow and make some changes that you aren't able to make in your waking life, but my ability to interprete for you is limited. If you want to know more I can do some research for you and/or you can look at my profile and find the "Acupuncture" tribe. I would recommend posting your night terrors question to that tribe and see what insights you might find there.
